9th October 2004 – Citigroup pip Davy’s in play-off drama...
Citigroup brought home the trophy after a nail-biting finish to the 4th Annual Roberto Bazzoni Onlus Tag Rugby Tournament. More than €30,000 was raised for the charity’s worthwhile initiatives.
This was the fourth Annual Tag Rugby Tournament hosted by the Roberto Bazzoni Onlus Charity – and it was the fourth Annual Tag Rugby Tournament that some-how managed to avoid being rained upon!
The tournament took place at the Old Belvedere Rugby Club on 9th October 2004. This year we had an extra two teams at the event, bringing the total number of teams to 8. We send our warmest thanks to the teams for their willingness to expose themselves to the jostles and bumps that this day invariably involves – and more importantly for their support of a very worthy cause. This year the teams were; Citigroup, MPS Asset Management, Pioneer Investments, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Davy Stockbrokers, UBS Investment Bank, ABN Amro and Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB).
Thanks also to Simon Bewley of the Irish Tag Rugby Association and his referees who turned out in force for the occasion in the interests of law and order.
A few minor injuries to report– Mauro Ratto sacrificed himself in the name of a try for Pioneer Investments. Dermot Aspell did similar playing for ABN Amro. In one of the day’s most fiercely-contested matches old enemies UBS and Credit Suisse First Boston got their chance to have it out on the rugby pitch – UBS won 2-1…not one for the faint-hearted.
PWC, with a terrific track-record in this event, were operating a little below par on the day – they tied with CSFB in the Wooden Spoon Final. Padraig Kenny stole a few spectacular break-away tries and helped hosts Pioneer Investments bring home the Bowl in the 5th/6th place final.
No.7 was a lucky number for Davy’s – Peter Dunne wore this number and scored as many tries, but it was James Collery of MPS Asset Management (RBO Tag Rugby Plate winners) who was the star try scorer of the day with an impressive tally of 11. All said, however, it was Citigroup who stole the show in the Cup final. Newcomers Davy’s put up an impressive fight and in an end-to-end encounter it came down to a tense 3-all at the whistle. But in sudden-death, it was Citi who prevailed with one of the scores of the afternoon to send their fans home happy.
The evening was wound up with dinner and dancing. With over €30,000 raised for charity and an enjoyable day had by all – the only question left is who is up for next year’s challenge?...
