The 12th annual Spagnolli Bazzoni Onlus Golf Tournament was a great success and thankfully the rain held off for much of the day!

On Thursday 13th June, 27 teams togged out in their water-proofs and high factor suncream to brave the unpredictable Irish weather on the 18 hole championship course of Luttrellstown Castle. Overall scores were lower than last year and Pioneer Investments lost their reigning title to UBS who took first place. Ian Maynard, Eric Hughson and Steven Blake of UBS were the outright winners by 4 points with a total of 82 points.

HSBC's Eoin O’Sullivan, Garett Dempsey and Michael Lalor took second place with 78 points. Third place was awarded to Peter Mulligan, Ciaran Byrne and Stephen Cassidy, another HSBC Team with 73 points! Congratulations to all the winners.

The Spagnolli-Bazzoni Onlus are delighted to have such generous supporters who return year after year, and every year we are delighted to welcome some new and old faces. This year we raised in excess of €50,000 with many thanks to all of you. A special thank you goes to our Gold Sponsor Pioneer Investments, whose unwavering support is invaluable.

Also, thank you to all those who entered a bid on the fantastic auction items and who bought raffle tickets, and of course particular thanks to all the companies who generously donated all the great prizes. With no administrative costs, all the contributions will go directly to the people who really need the help.

In Zimbabwe we continue to treat in excess of 2,200 patients affected by AIDS. The project supports patients and their families, giving them the means to live as “normal” a life as possible. Despite the lack of media attention to the plight of the people of Zimbabwe, little has changed in the past few years, and the political and economic oppression continues unabated.

We are extremely excited about our new projects for 2013/14; the first is the revival of the production of local crafts by the mothers affected by AIDS. These crafts are sold at the local markets so that the women can earn their own money and provide for their children.

The next development was the San Marcellino Village, where some 80 orphan children are under care. We have helped to increase the availability of teachers and re-organise the classes in order to offer the children a better life and education. We have built a new school, devoted to the children of the village and to those of the neighbourhood.

Finally, we launched the project for the prevention of cervical cancer, which is the first cause of mortality in women in their childbearing years. Our goal is to train 36 doctors and nurses per year, over three years. This would result in some 150,000 women screened. This is a sustainable project.

These projects are on-going and we thank you for your continuing support.

We sincerely hope you enjoyed the day and we look forward to seeing you all again next year!
