The 2006 Fundraising Gala Dinner took place in the beautiful surroundings of the Banqueting House of Whitehall Palace, London, on the evening of 9 November.

The event raised more money than any before. With no overheads to pay, every cent of the €420,000 donated will supply medical aid, food, fuel and generators. It will also support qualified staff at the Luisa Guidotti Hospital in Mutoko, Zimbabwe.

All of this is possible because our friends and sponsors gathered thousands of miles from, and in contrasting luxury to, our operations. They heard of our work, dug deep and pledged their generous support.

Master of Ceremonies, Laurence McCabe welcomed us to the evening which was sponsored by Pioneer Investments, Citigroup, Deutsche Bank, HSBC, Lehman Brothers, Societe Generale, ABN Amro and GoldenSource and our friends in the hedge fund industry.

Our host for the evening, Giordano Lombardo of Pioneer Investments had warm praise for the work that the Roberto Bazzoni Onlus has achieved, pointing to the dedication of his colleague and Onlus Chairman, Sebastiano Bazzoni.

Sebastiano painted a poignant picture of the difficult circumstances under which the charity operates, not just in terms of the direct suffering, but also the external forces that add unwelcome pressure to its work. “Zimbabwe is heaving under the weight of economic instability, political instability and an AIDS pandemic”, he said.

He asked us to imagine being the doctor in a hospital with no water supply and regular power cuts. Then, he introduced that Doctor.

Dr. Carlo Spagnolli, surgeon at the Luisa Guidotti Hospital, Mutoko , drew us into the world in which he works, the harsh realities and the dramatic circumstances.

And drama followed with the evening’s entertainment. First, operatic performances by the Accademia del Teatro alla Scala. Favorites from Verdi and Rossini created a frisson. Psychological Illusionist, Keith Barry thrilled us with his unique brand of magic. With Sebastiano Bazzoni as his audience participation victim he created a knife edge display of nerve-wrecking magic.

Throughout the night a raffle was held for a quilt created by the women’s group in Mutoko. Each of the hundreds of tickets sold will contribute to the antiretroviral therapy so necessary in our fight against AIDS.

South African/Zimbabwean Choir, Amabutho, sent us out into the cold London air wrapped in the jubilant warmth of their Zulu sounds – a taste of the very real sense of rejoicing felt for 1400 African lives saved.
