| “Viva Italia” Raises $100,000 for Luisa Guidotti Hospital |
 |
The 3rd Annual “Viva Italia,” the fundraising auction for Roberto Bazzoni Onlus (the “Onlus”), raised approximately $100,000 for the AIDS patients at the Luisa Guidotti Hospital in Mutoko, Zimbabwe. The event was held last Thursday night, November 18, at Boston Harbor Hotel with 150 guests in attendance.
Auction items included stays at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai and at deluxe country inns in New England, California and Canada. Other items included a 27” Sony Trinitron flat screen television, a Bose Wave Radio, a case of Chianti, wine tastings, gourmet food baskets, Venetian crystal, sports memorabilia such as a Mark Bellhorn baseball, Tom Brady and Adam Vinatieri footballs, a Drew Bledsoe football, Boston Celtics autographed basketballs, and much, much more.
The Onlus started treating 60 patients at the Luisa Guidotti Hospital in 2001, and is now treating 600 patients, 130 of whom are children. This facility is the only private hospital in Zimbabwe that provides free ARV treatment in the country, where over one third of the adult population is infected with HIV. For $310.00 per year, an adult can be treated with generic drugs. For $1,250.00 per year, a child can be treated with non-generics, as the small children are unable to tolerate the generics.
In addition, the Onlus is funding the opening of a satellite clinic in the capital city of Harare, where the medical staff of the Luisa Guidotti Hospital will start dispensing ARV treatment.
All funds raised from “Viva Italia” go directly to hospital suppliers for medicines and medical equipment.
The Onlus, an Italian acronym for nonprofit, was founded in 2000 in Milan, Italy to honor the memory and mission of Roberto Bazzoni, son of Sebastiano Bazzoni, an executive within the UniCredito organization. Roberto Bazzoni was on a United Nations-sponsored humanitarian mission plane, which crashed in a mountainside of Kosovo. All those aboard the plane perished. As Roberto Bazzoni was a prosthetic technician, the first project of the hospital was to build a prosthetic hospital in Kosovo, to treat those who had lost their limbs due to land mines and other acts of war.
